A medal can arrive with a recycled ribbon, a paper sleeve and a silver-colored metal body. Which part, exactly, is recycled? Unless the supplier’s evidence answers that question, calling the whole award a “recycled medal” can leave the event team promising more than it knows.

If you are evaluating recycled metal medals for a race, school or corporate event, start with the component and the evidence. This is a purchasing checklist, not a claim that every metal medal contains recycled material or that PinsCraftPro holds a particular environmental certification.

Why documentation is receiving more attention

PPAI’s September 4, 2026 overview of industry ESG reports emphasizes verified information and transparency in merchandise companies’ sustainability reporting. Those company-level reports are useful context, but another supplier’s achievements do not establish the recycled content or footprint of your award.

The practical lesson is to move from “Do you have sustainable products?” to “What can you substantiate about this exact item?” The answer should survive being passed from purchasing to the event website editor without changing meaning.

Describe the medal as a set of components

Ask for a simple bill of materials covering the metal body, finish, color decoration, attachment, ribbon and individual packaging. Include optional inserts and display boxes if they will be supplied. A photograph is not a material declaration, and a product family name may cover several different specifications.

The point is not to demand a large file for its own sake. It is to prevent evidence for one part from being used as evidence for the whole assembly.

Read the percentage and its denominator together

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s Green Guides summary advises qualifying claims for partly recycled products and distinguishing specific benefits from broad environmental claims. Its consumer guidance also asks whether a statement concerns the product, package or both. These are U.S. references; have the responsible reviewer assess wording for your destination market.

In purchasing terms, record both the claimed percentage and what was weighed or measured. Does a statement cover the cast metal body only, the complete medal without ribbon, or the assembled award? Is it pre-consumer or post-consumer material, and how does the supplier define and document that distinction?

A hypothetical example shows why the boundary matters. If a metal body weighs 80 grams and has documented 50% recycled content by mass, it contains 40 grams of that material. If the ribbon and other components add 20 grams with no supported recycled content, you cannot simply call the complete 100-gram award “50% recycled.” This calculation illustrates scope; it is not a product specification or an approved marketing claim.

Check whether the evidence follows the item

A general policy document can explain a supplier’s intentions. It does not necessarily identify the material used in your order. Ask how the product code, material source and production batch connect to the supporting declaration.

Use a small evidence register rather than a folder of unexplained PDFs:

• Claim: the exact statement being proposed.
• Scope: the component, product and quantity covered.
• Source: who issued the evidence and their role in the supply chain.
• Period: the relevant production dates or document validity.
• Method: how the figure was obtained and what exclusions apply.
• Decision: approved, needs clarification or not supported.

If certification is offered, verify the issuer, current validity and relevant scope. A facility-level certificate and a product-level claim are not interchangeable. Ask the supplier to explain the connection instead of assuming a logo on a presentation slide covers your medal.

Approve appearance and performance separately

Material documentation does not replace a product sample. Review surface finish, small lettering, color, attachment security and the ribbon assembly against the agreed specification. Record how any cosmetic variation will be judged before production begins.

Do not treat a sustainability document as a product-safety report. If your intended recipients or sales destination create testing requirements, ask the appropriate compliance specialist which requirements apply to the finished product. This guide is not a legal or testing determination.

Reduce avoidable surplus before adding an environmental slogan

Quantity planning is an operational choice you can make even while material claims are being clarified. Separate registered participants, sponsor commitments, volunteers and the contingency allocation. Write down why the contingency exists rather than automatically repeating last year’s over-order.

If late registration is substantial, ask about a staged purchase or a separate later batch. Compare the additional setup and freight with the risk of unused dated medals. Splitting shipments is not automatically environmentally better; it is a trade-off to evaluate with actual quantities, transport and timing.

Artwork can help preserve usefulness. An undated base design with an approved event-specific element may suit a recurring program, but confirm how that element is produced and attached. Do not remove a meaningful event date merely to solve an inventory problem if the date is central to the award.

Use a claims review before the event page goes live

Give the website editor the approved wording, not a verbal summary. Keep unsupported terms such as “zero impact” or “carbon neutral” out of the copy. A claim about recycled material does not by itself establish a lower total carbon footprint, and a recyclability statement needs a real disposal route for the relevant place and product.

Our suggested editorial check is to read the headline, caption and product description together. Does a narrow qualification appear only far below a broad headline? Could the ribbon’s claim be mistaken for a claim about the metal? Would a customer reasonably assume certification that the documents do not establish?

When evidence is incomplete, use accurate construction details and explain what remains unconfirmed. Buying a well-specified medal without an environmental claim is preferable to presenting an uncertain claim as a fact.

Write a quote request that leaves room for a documented answer

Send the proposed design, dimensions, quantity, ribbon, packaging, delivery destination and event date. Then state your preferred recycled-content objective as a requirement to investigate, not as an already verified property. Ask for a conventional alternative if the requested material or documentation is unavailable.
